Ever wondered why we have classic typewriters on display in our stores? It’s a nod to where it all began. Here’s how UOE grew from a small typewriter repair shop into the UK’s leading independent stationery and Post Office retailer.

UOE was founded in 1983 by Matt and Helga Pavilides as Universal Office Equipment, specialising in typewriter and adding machine sales and servicing. The business quickly expanded, opening a dedicated repair centre in the City of London at 2 Creechurch Lane, EC2, and later its first retail store at 112 High Road, East Finchley, N2.
Through the 1980s, UOE became one of the UK’s largest typewriter, photocopier, and dictation machine maintenance companies, servicing national contracts for Prudential Insurance, Eagle Star, Berrymans Solicitors, and other major legal and financial firms. The company was also ahead of the curve in the personal computing revolution, becoming one of the UK’s first Amstrad resellers in 1984 with the launch of the Amstrad 1512.
By 1984, UOE needed more space and relocated to 120 High Road, East Finchley, expanding its repair centre and retail offering while growing its business supplies and hardware sales across London and the Home Counties.

A 16-year-old Elliot Jacobs (now UOE’s CEO and Postmaster) joined the business in 1988, working Saturday shifts in the retail shop while studying. Over the next four years, he gained valuable experience in retail and customer service before moving into a career in technology, gaming, and financial software.
On 5th May 1998, Matt and Helga retired, and Elliot acquired the business, bringing his technology expertise to UOE by launching one of the UK’s first online B2B stationery businesses—right at the height of the dot-com boom.
UOE quickly became a leader in office supplies innovation. In 2005, the company launched QuickDrop, the UK’s first 90-minute delivery service for stationery and office supplies—years ahead of Amazon Prime. Operating from a second retail store near St Paul’s Cathedral (3-4 Ave Maria Lane, EC4), QuickDrop helped UOE secure blue-chip clients and earned the company its first BOSS Award for Best Marketing Initiative. In 2008, UOE sold its St Paul’s location to Halfords.
In 2014, UOE took a bold step into Post Office retailing, winning its first franchise and relocating East Finchley Post Office into its existing store. This was the beginning of a new business model that combined stationery retail with essential postal and community services.
2019: Opened its 7th location in Camden

With seven stores and plans for more, UOE made a strategic decision in October 2019 to sell its B2B office supplies division to Quills Group, allowing full focus on its retail and Post Office model. Just five months later, the world went into lockdown.
Navigating the Pandemic & Beyond (2020 – Present)
During the COVID-19 pandemic, UOE was designated a critical infrastructure provider and kept every store open, every day, serving local communities when they needed it most.
By February 2023, UOE was back in growth mode, opening its Ware Post Office & retail store. In May 2023, Next Wave Partners invested a significant seven-figure sum to fuel further expansion and cement UOE’s position as the UK’s leading independent stationery and Post Office retailer.

In 2024, UOE continued its momentum:
With ambitious plans for the future, UOE remains committed to delivering expert service, supporting local communities, and keeping the high street thriving.
This is just the beginning. Watch this space.
